Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye. But to determine whether Kate has staying power in the MCU-and, in fact, why she should-it’s worth taking a dive into her history.

#KATE BISHOP FULL#
Steinfeld is an ideal actress for the part both her Dickinson comedic timing and her Edge of Seventeen knack for balancing bubbly enthusiasm and deadpan delivery are on full display. While the ensuing street-level saga is certainly a welcome departure from Marvel's usual universe-hopping adventures, Hawkeye is perhaps most notable for its introduction of Kate herself. She’s since trained to master her archery and martial arts skills in his image, though she has little intention of ever meeting her hero-until she dons his old Ronin costume in episode 1, instantly gaining his attention during his Manhattan Christmas vacation.

In the Disney+ series Hawkeye, Hailee Steinfeld plays a college-student version of Kate, who idolizes Clint Barton’s Hawkeye for saving her life during the Battle of New York in The Avengers, way back in 2012. But now that she’s an official fixture in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, that charisma will reach its real test. To hear Clint Barton say it, Kate Bishop is “like nine years old and spoiled rotten.” But after the astounding success of the Matt Fraction and David Aja-led Hawkeye comics, she’s also one of Marvel’s most enduring fan-favorite characters, a sharpshooter known for her back-talk as much as her talent with a bow. Pick up my sci-fi novels Herokiller and Herokiller 2, and read my first series, The Earthborn Trilogy, which is also on audiobook.

I do think Avengers is getting a worse rap than it deserves (it is fifty times better than say, Godfall), but it will take major changes and additions to generate interest on a large scale.įollow me on Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.

The game needs something big.Īgain, I don’t know how much runway Crystal Dynamics has here between pressure from Square Enix and the weight of the important Marvel license hanging over them. But I will tell you right now that Hawkeye, who will share most of Kate Bishop’s moves, will probably generate even less interest than her by the time he rolls around next year.
#KATE BISHOP UPDATE#
We know that Black Panther is coming, but it’s about all we know, and we don’t know the scale of that update or when it will arrive. What I foresee as a possible salvation for Avengers is something like a sprawling Wakanda expansion, a huge new zone there full of missions, Black Panther arriving as a new hero, and fundamental changes to the structure of the game to address issues with loot and gearing that have been there from the start. Even I, Avengers superfan, haven’t bothered with that yet. Then the gear grind to 150 takes eons, but all you’re doing there is re-running old content from the last three months getting incremental upgrades. With Kate, for instance, you could beat her mission chain in two hours and then have her hit level 50 in maybe another three hours. It’s free, yes, which is nice, but it’s also not substantive enough to truly transform the game. Their plan is to just keep adding new characters to the game and short strings of missions with those characters.

Other games have done free updates, but put in the time to make them huge and substantive, which is how you now have games like No Man’s Sky taking how Best Ongoing Game at the Game Awards years after its painful debut.īut Avengers is sort of splitting the difference here. All manner of looters have gotten huge expansions that have been turning points for them, Destiny’s The Taken King, Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls. The problem with trying to become the gaming industry’s latest “turnaround” story is that you need two things: 1) time and 2) a massive update. In comparison, fellow loot-based game, the industry-leading Destiny 2, peaked at 85,000 players yesterday on Steam It is now December 17, not even ten days after her launch, and we are once again peaking under 1,000 players and the low times have sunk to 400 or so. You can blame Cyberpunk which is eating everyone’s attention, but fundamentally, I just don’t think Kate, however good she is, is enough to generate interest in the game for more than a few days, which is what’s seen here.
